Looking towards the future

Rick has been getting up and walking more with a full height walker. This enables him to walk around with ease and upright, not having to crouch over.  Someone follows behind with a recliner type chair so if he needs to take a break and sit or rest, then he is able to.

Right now he has his days and nights mixed up and is sleeping for a good portion of the day, but the hospital staff is taking steps to change that before he is discharged.  YES, DISCHARGED!

Rick's family has been consulting with a Social Worker on staff at the hospital to determine where Rick's next stop in his journey should be.  They are gathering facts and opinions from medical professionals and will be checking availability with several Milwaukee area rehabilitation facilities where Rick can get the therapy he needs that is suited for his injury, progress and ultimately his recovery.

The hospital staff is also monitoring his sugar levels and has been since he was admitted on Saturday.  Originally, it was a possibility that he may be pre-Diabetic.  He was placed on an IV of insulin. That has since been removed and he has been given a "constant carb" diet.  It is unlikely that he is Diabetic, but there is some family history, so they are keeping a close watch on his sugar levels and his diet for now.  It's been explained to Mary that after an injury of this type, that it's a common occurrence (kind of like gestational diabetes with a pregnancy). But nothing at all to be overly concerned about.

For now, Rick will remain at Aspirus in Wauasu.  Sometime next week, when the decision is made where he will be transferred, and availability is determined, Rick will move to his next temporary home.  One stop closer to his family home in Menomonee Falls.
