All Settled In

I went to see Rick at Sacred Heart tonight, after work. My daughter, Nicole, went with me. He didn't know who either of us were, but he talked to us, a lot.

Mostly he is talking about work, trucks, parts, orders; things pertaining to his job. He is able to maneuver his remote control for the TV and call the nurse. He really doesn't know which channels he is turning to, but he  know which one to turn it on and off and scroll through the channels.

Rick has lost some weight, but continues to feed himself and he eats really well. He usually finishes everything on his tray, even a few things he wouldn't eat before his accident (peas and tomatoes)! His sugar continues to be high, so he has been taking insulin and the nurses monitor it for him.

Tomorrow, Rick will be evaluated, and will begin some therapy classes. He will continue to have an Occupational Therapist work with him for his personal daily grooming. But now he will begin the cognitive phase of his therapy as well. Let's hope it all goes well for him. He does seem to retain a current memory when you tell him something. He doesn't always like what he hears, but he follows directions really well when he wants to. (Sounds like our Rick, doesn't it?)

During our visit he would make a move to get out of bed and tell Mary,
"Let's go. Are you ready to go?"
Go where Rick?
"To get something to eat"
You already ate, Rick
"Well lets hop in the car and take a ride."
No, Rick we have to stay here.
"Well, Mary you can stay here if you want to, but I'm leaving."
